The first semi-mountain stage brought heartache to team Astana. Overall favorites Andreas Kloden and Alexander Vinokourov crashed at different parts of the day. Kloden fractured his tailbone, and Vino has stitches in his right elbow and both knees, as well as various amount of road rash on his body. However, the day belonged to former Milan-San Remo winner Filippo Pozatto, as he took the field sprint ahead of Erik Zabel and former 3-time world champion Oscar Freire. Saturday will bring the first high mountain stage of the tour. Tomorrow will hopefully be an easy day for the crash victims to recover in anticipation of the mountains.
